Pets
Shortly after we got married in 1999 Sean bought me a kitten, who we named Neo, for my birthday. Two years later, he got me Trinity, again for my birthday. In 2004, we adopted Niobe (all three names are from The Matrix) and said that's it, no more pets!
Then we moved to Ridgecrest and discovered that several stray cats had formed a colony and were visiting our back patio each night to beg for food. One of the cats, who we called Puff, was particularly sweet and friendly. A couple months later, we discovered that she was pregnant and fearing that she and the kittens would die out in the elements we took her to the local animal shelter. Later that week, I called to check on her and was told the kittens were being aborted and she was being put to sleep.
Cut to me bawling like a baby.
So I begged and begged and they finally agreed to let me adopt her. We figured what the heck, one more cat won't kill us. When we got her home we were delighted to find that she had a very serious respiratory infection, so I spent the next week living in our bathroom so that I could feed her with a dropper and give her meds every couple hours. Well she finally pulled through and gave birth to six kittens. It was a really amazing day. Shortly after that, Sean found a kitten trapped in the garage and then a week later caught another one next to the garage. We brought them in to nurse with Puff and the kittens since they were to young to be on their own.
So, when the kittens were eight weeks old we put an ad in the paper and online to find homes for the kittens. We even made each kitten a gift bag full of information, toys, food, bowls etc. We tried for a solid month and only found a home for one kitten. Apparently there is a huge number of stray cats in Ridgecrest and no one wanted another one. So now we had 11 cats.
Then on Halloween night as we were feeding the stray cats a tiny puff of orange fur snuck up to the food bowl and tried to eat. He was promptly beaten away by the adult cats. He couldn't have been more than six weeks old. So I sat in the cold dirt all night in my night gown getting him used to me and when he was close enough I yanked him up and ran like hell.
We tried to take him to the animal rescue (NOT the animal shelter) just as we had done with the other kittens but they were full and wouldn't take him. So what was I to do? And that's how we ended up with 12 annoying, adorable, frustrating, mess making, lovable, hilarious cats.
Our Apartment In Ridgecrest California 2005
Pictures of our first real home, an apartment in the tiny town of Ridgecrest CA. We were right on the edge of Death Valley in a Navy town literally in the middle of no where. Ridgecrest is super small, super hot and super dry. Despite all that we miss it insanely.
CA to DE
Our seemingly endless move from California to Delaware with my parents and 12 cats. It's something I hope to never ever do again. Most of these photos were taken from a moving car or a moving plane so go me with my mad photography skills!
